Please join us for our next AWMA lunch meeting, where we will hear from Katie Wolohan of Barr Engineering Company. Katie will spotlight the emerging contaminant – PFAS.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging contaminants of concern in groundwater and drinking water systems. For energy companies, their link and liability to the issue is through the training and use of Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) concentrates. PFAS have the potential to impact water supplies and are a challenge to capture and remove. This presentation will provide a brief history of PFAS, an overview of state and federal regulations, the current state of knowledge around sampling and testing, AFFF use best practices, remediation and water treatment techniques, and will cover potential future issues that may affect water supplies.

Katie Wolohan, P.E. is a professional environmental engineer with six years of consulting experience assisting industrial and municipal clients with water and wastewater treatment, water reuse, and environmental compliance and permitting.  She has worked with multiple clients to navigate emerging contaminants (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and 1,4-dioxane) water treatment options and challenges from conceptual design and bench/pilot testing through full-scale system start-up.

The meeting will be held at the Colorado State Bank Building, located at 1600 Broadway Denver, CO 80210, on the 5th floor conference room, on Tuesday, November 13thWe will start with refreshments and networking at 11:30, followed by the presentation around noon, and we’ll adjourn around 1pm.
