AWMA’s N.M. Chapter would like to express its appreciation to John Acklen, Technical Project Manager in the Environmental Services Department at the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), for his June presentation entitled: “PNM’s ‘Other’ Sustainability Programs.” Programs such as energy efficiency and both renewable and solar energies tend to capture the most public attention, but PNM has created other programs which serve to protect both cultural and natural resources and the environment. Prominent among them are PNM’s Environmental Management System (EMS) for Transmission and Distribution (T&D) and the company’s migratory bird program. John is in charge of PNM’s waste minimization program and the company’s migratory bird protection program. He works in planning and permitting major electric construction projects throughout PNM’s service area. He discussed the development of PNM’s EMS for T&D and the development of its waste reduction program, one of PNM’s flagship sustainability programs. John developed PNM’s migratory bird program and is also its Avian Power Line Interaction Committee Representative. He is a founding member of the New Mexico Avian Protection Plan working group and volunteers with raptor research and conservation organizations including Hawks Aloft and HawkWatch, International. For more information on PNM’s EMS, please visit: https://www.pnm.com/environment-management-system. ; For more information on how PNM protects wildlife, please visit: https://www.pnm.com/protecting-wildlife. ; For more information about PNM’s recycling, please visit: https://www.pnm.com/recycling.
