Mark your calendars for our March AWMA-RMSS meeting on Friday, March 25th, at the National Park Service’s “Academy Place,” 7333 W Jefferson Avenue in Lakewood (near Hampden & Wadsworth), Room 440. Our guest speaker will be Jared Bray of Weaver Consultants and his talk is titled: “Producing Structural Concrete while Using Mine Tailings as a Subsitute for Fine Aggregate.”
Time: 11:30 lunch (no cost); 11:50 welcome and introductions; noon presentation
Place: National Park Service, 7333 W. Jefferson, Lakewood, Conference Room 440
DIRECTIONS:
The meeting location is at Academy Place, 4th Floor conference room, which is one block south of Wadsworth and Hampden. Enter the building on the east side and go up the elevator to the 4th floor. Turn left and go about 50 feet to the conference room on the left.
ABSTRACT. Our guest speaker’s talk is entitled “Producing Structural Concrete while Using Mine Tailings as a Subsitute for Fine Aggregate,” and will cover a bench scale study with the objective of producing concrete containing mine tailings in place of aggregate while investigating the structural integrity and leaching of heavy metals from the resulting concrete. Compressive strength greater than 4350 psi (30 mPa) was achieved when 70% of the fine aggregate was substituted with mine tailings. The potential of leaching heavy metals was evaluated using a standard leaching method, where Cd, Ge, Mn, and Zn were shown to have been encapsulated in the concrete matrix by at least 2 orders of magnitude. The next step is creating a pilot scale structure utilizing this construction material.
Mr. Jared Bray has 4 years of data management, research and development, and construction observation experience in the energy, mining, and solid waste industries. Recently, Jared finished a graduate research project at the Colorado School of Mines and then worked at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO, where he participated in the production of biofuels. Currently, Jared works at Weaver Consultants Group, a consulting firm, gaining experience with the permitting, construction, and record phases of civil engineering projects.
